You will be surprised to know that India is the country in the world that shuts down the internet the most number of times. The report of the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations revealed that from 2012 to 2019, due to some reason or the other, the internet was shut down 367 times in different states of India.

Why does the government shut down the internet?

Often we see that whenever any major incident or violence occurs, the government immediately shuts down the internet. The reason behind this is that the government fears that law and order may deteriorate, due to which the internet is shut down.

This also happens because amid any communal or political tension, fake news is spread rapidly on messaging apps or social media on the internet, due to which there is a danger of violence spreading. This is the reason why the Internet is shut down even before there is a possibility of something bigger happening.

What is the process?

The process of shutting down the Internet is quite different. We might think that the government has some button, after pressing which the entire internet gets shut down, but it is not so. This process is completely different. Actually, the government orders Internet Service Providers (ISPs) i.e. mobile service provider companies to shut down the Internet and gets the Internet shut down.
